Day 4: Book Marathon: We go to the library weekly (to be featured in an upcoming post) and books are strewn everywhere. What are your favourite books?
-right now they are books that are songs. We either make up the tune (Snuggle Puppy by Sandra Boynton) or its a well known song (Whole World, Mulberry Bush, both hugely popular here at the household!)
How do you keep reading really interesting and fun as the kids get older?
-we have moved from 100% board books with simple messages and pictures to integrating some non-board books with more stories and complicated pictures. I was scared she would just wreck the pages, so far so good.
What are your reading goals? (could be 1000 books in 2009, 12 chapter books in 12 months, go to the library every month, etc)
-first goal: to organize this mess! I am currently looking for a short bookshelf to put all the childrens books on the mainfloor
-second goal: for me to read a chapter book a month. This is achieved through our book club, but over the summer months I will have to find my own books (I already have the new Wally Lamb for those months!)

Day 5: Painting: This took our finger painting to the next level: using kitchen utensils! We paint often and its a favorite of Missy's. PS Paint does not taste good, even if eaten off of a whisk.

Day 6: Get Outside: Ok, I get it. We're unplugging and going to outside and frolick with the twigs and ladybugs and skyscrapers. So take a look at these photos and understand that the current temperature is -30. When it is -10 we take it into consideration and get outside. We also make sure we do some sort of physical indoor activity during these months (swimming, running around the museum, free gym time, play dates at gyms, etc)
How do you encourage outside play?
-in appropriate weather, its just part of our day, usually between nap and supper. Plus, we know to take advantage of it, even rainy days, because look what the rest of the year is like!
Do the kids have to go out everyday?
-not necessarily, but we try to get her outdoors daily. Its better for the whole family, breaks up the day, and is less time of her complaining or tantruming because she is bored or "ine hunry".

MONDAY A.M. UPDATED TEMP: CURRENTLY -45 WITH WINDCHILL.

Wowie! That is cold.Hadn't thought about a chapter book a month. Nice idea. Thanks for joining in.
And I was tired of the cold here in Utah! I hear the same request when my Sammi is bored. She would eat all day! It looks beautiful up there!
I didn't realize this was an orgainzed thing, with directions and all. Now I kinda wish I'd joined in. Maybe it'd have kicked my rear into doing some kid centered activities worth blogging on! We've been really into playdoh lately but I haven't done a post on it yet.
Whoops, meant to also say you're very brave letting Missy paint without a smock or anything! You must be the fun parent, my kiddo is always covered head to toe in an Ikea smock when doing messy stuff.
Its Crayola finger paints, so its washable. (she is also wearing her pjs in these photos) She wears an apron for playdoh time, but that is more of a tradition than a must-do. I am not that fun!!
