I read in a few of my toddler manuals that threading beads is a good activity for the 18 months - 2 year old motor developmental stage. Melissa and Doug have Lacing Beads in a Box for over $20 Canadian. Or you can go to Michaels and buy your own wooden beads and paint them yourself and toss in some shoelaces! These particular beads are wheels for wooden cars, which are better than the barrel shaped ones which can be lodged perfectly into the toddler windpipe.
Painting 2 of each color makes fun matching games too. Or maybe you just want to play "dump all the beads from the basket, pick them up, and dump them again" over and over. These flat beads are stackable too.
Wow great idea! When I first read beads, I thought of those little TINY ones you can make small necklaces out of and most hands have a hard time with those! You ARE the queen of toddler crafts.
It's also good to start working on simple patterns with beads, such as ABAB or AABBAA or ABCABC. This is a kindergarten benchmark in CA, but most kids come already knowing how to do it. Each letter represent a different color or object. So if A was green and B is blue then ABAB would be green, blue, green, blue etc. Fine motor wise my 36 month old can't quite get the beads on 100 percent of the time. Guess that's why it's a good activity to practice!
