I have rediscovered the library. Everything is FREE! You can take out ANYTHING YOU WANT! For myself, I love taking out cookbooks and scanning recipes I think we would like. I like the how-to craft books. Usually those ones get read and appreciated but nothing comes from them! I like the magazine section too; especially scrapbooking and parenting magazines.
When Missy was a baby, I would go myself and pick her up some new books and myself parenting books (How to get your baby to sleep, 101 Purees, etc). Now we go together. Always once a week, but the day differs. She doesn't even notice there are books there. She goes for the puzzles, computer, massive stuffed dragon, fish tank, people watching, CD's, foam tower blocks and abacus. She plays and roams while I pick out SIX books for her. Only six. That is our individual limit, anymore and I would start to lose track. And every week I have to find six to return.
We also have a special library bag. Nana and Poppy gave us a New York Public Libary messenger bag that holds all our important library stuff (library card, kleenex, baby wash cloth, loose change for late fees and parking meters, soother). Its nice to have a distinguishable bag that you use only for your special library trips. Its fun for the older tot to have their own too!
As she grows we can start going to more library story times and activities. They have theme parties and seasonal affairs for tots. They have toys we can take out on loan basis. We take advantage of the huge library of DVD's and CD's. That is how we discovered the amazing Elizabeth Mitchell. We take out a different Wiggles DVD out every week. It saves us so much money!
Tonight we came home, took off our (still) winter coats, put on our pjs, and curled up on the book reading couch and read our six books together. I hid the DVD before she could see it.

Do you love your library?
Do you take the kids to the library? Go yourself?
What do you take out?
Do you have a special library bag?
I want to hear from Celeste, Jenn, Baba, Nana, Katie, Kathie, Jaz, Signer, and everyone else :)

Yep we go to the Library. I only rediscovered ours too. I hadn't had a membership in so long, I was no longer in their system. I guess this was 14 years ago! We have one we can walk to as well but it doesn't have any stuffed bear or fish tank!!!!
I've read so many of the books from the library here that now I have to buy my favorite authors and then I donate them to the library. I served on the Library Board in Rankin Inlet. When I was grade 4,5,6 we had a small school library, my mother, praBaba, enrolled me in the provincial library, and I would get a book in the mail from Regina. Baba
I forgot I also served on the library board in Warman for years and years. baba.
BOOK IN THE MAIL!!
Did it come by train too?
I remember you were on the warman board...
when i was a little girl there was a library book i *adored*... seriously i read that thing multiple times each day. it was called the first book of babies... and was kind of a small child's informational book about baby care around the world ( and yes, i know i was an odd child. you don't have to rub it in, sheesh)
anyway.. i would renew this book every week, until one week the librarian told me i couldn't renew it. i had to put it back on the shelf. *horrors* i spent that whole next week in a state of deep angst, rushed up to the book shelf the next week and what a relief to find it still there. but the librarian, hard-hearted woman, made me leave it for yet another week. after that i checked it out again. phew!
well a couple of years ago, my daughters tracked down a copy of that book and gave it to me for Christmas... and i love it so much. still♥
I love this message! The message is a highly under-tapped resource in many communities. Though, I've heard that the economic downturn has increased library traffic in places. Unfortunately this spike in library use means less people are actually buying books. :(
We love our library storytimes, not to mention all the MANY other services they offer. Libraries rock! As Marc Brown's Arthur says, "Having fun isn't hard when you've got a library card!"
I linked to you this morning in my "linky love" post... hope you don't mind!
have a blessed Sabbath♥
We love our library, we just got a brand spankin' two story one with a view of the river. It's amazing compared to the dinky one we had before. We go for storytime each session and ER really loves it. We get a ton of books and DVDs out, I have to say our collection doesn't seem nearly as great as yours does!
Being an under paid social worker/single parent, of course I take my kids to the library! They looove reading and there is no way I could keep up with them otherwise. I mostly check out magazines, except in the summer when I have more time to read. Props for libraries!
